Each side starts with 16 pieces on the classic 8×8 board: eight pawns, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen, and a king. White always moves first, and the goal is to checkmate the opponent's king — putting it in a position where it's attacked and cannot escape. You can also win by taking advantage of your opponent's mistake: every legal chess rule is enforced, from castling to capturing en passant. If neither side can make a legal move, the game ends in a stalemate draw.

You win by checkmate: when your opponent's king is under attack and every possible response leaves it in danger. A game can also end in a stalemate draw when the side to move has no legal moves but isn't in check. The AI opponent plays Black in vs AI mode using a minimax search with alpha-beta pruning, so it finds captures and holds its ground — but a patient player can still find the holes in its plan.
